The St Andrews University Real Ale Society, SAURAS for short (like a dinosaur, get it? Aren't we so smart) is the society dedicated to promoting cask conditioned ale, and pub life in the university. We believe drinking should be something which is done socially, over the course of an evening, and with a drink you actually want to drink, rather than with Tesco value vodka before leaving your house.
We do this through organising brewery tours, trips to ale festivals (with discounts on admission and transport), brewing our own ales as well as though our weekly pub meetings. As our meetings normally involve sitting around, drinking, and talking, we're a social society almost by definition. And don't worry, we're not elitist. If you've never tried real ale before, or even if you actually do quite like tesco value vodka, thank you very much, we're not here to judge. Come along, try some ale, meet some new people, and see if you'd like to join.

If you have an idea for an adventure, we are here to help you make it happen. We also run a number of annually recurrent trips, open to all adventurous students, and if you'd just like to share stories and have a chat with like-minded people, come along to our socials, during which a wacky idea or two is also likely to emerge.
STAND was created by several American students at Georgetown University and since then has flourished into an 850 chapter worldwide movement. From 2006 until 2010, STAND had been the student-led division of the Genocide Intervention Network (GI-NET). In 2011, the Genocide Intervention Network and Save Darfur Coalition combined efforts and founded the organisation, United to End Genocide, the single largest advocacy organisation in the US and the largest anti-genocide organisation in the world. With a new head organisation, STAND is stronger and more effective than ever. STAND aims to raise awareness of such atrocities occuring all over the world, to fundraise for key Non Governmental Organisations that play a crucial role in these humanitarian crises, and to promote activism among students %u2013 essentially teaching us to not just stand by, but to STAND UP. Our activities are extremely diverse, ranging from spreading awareness via photo exhibitions and human rights-centred theatre productions to petitioning local MPs on action in Darfur to informing the St Andrews student body on the crisis in the Eastern Congo. Rather than standing by, we encourage our fellow peers to STAND UP.
It is fundamentally better for our nation if the decisions concerning it are taken by the people who care most about Scotland. That is, and always will be, the people of Scotland. We organise political events with guest speakers and are involved in campaigning across both the local and national community. The Yes Scotland campaign launched in May, and we would encourage everyone to get involved at this exciting and transformative time in Scotland's history.
